Garneau Towers
The bigger of the two, on 111 Street, with the fitness centre and the cheapest rooms we let.
A plain, well-kept tower with red-oxide fins and a cantilevered concrete canopy over the door that has been there since it was built. The rooms have been refurbished and the amenity floor redone; the bones are original and it does not pretend otherwise.
This is the building to pick if you want the gym downstairs, the lowest rent on this site, or the shorter walk to Whyte Avenue and the Safeway. Campus is the next block west.

Fitness centre
Two rooms on the amenity floor: cardio and machines in the larger one, cable and free weights in the smaller. Both have windows, which matters more than it sounds like it should between November and March. University Tower does not have one.

Somewhere to be that is neither your room nor the library. Chairs you can put a laptop on, and a door you can close behind you.

Commercial stacked washers and dryers in one, domestic machines and a utility sink in the other. No trip outside in a parka carrying a basket.

Lobby and entrance
A glazed lobby under the original cantilevered canopy, with a controlled door and cameras at the entrance. Deliveries come to the door rather than to a lockbox down the street.

Bathroom
One bathroom with a tub and shower, shared by the four bedrooms. No room in either building has a private bathroom, and we would rather you knew that now than on move-in day.
Dining and living area
A table that seats four and a sitting area, inside the suite rather than three floors away. This is where a suite either becomes a household or does not.
