Walking figures are measured along the street grid from each building, at eighty metres a minute, rounded up. Edmonton is a strict grid, so that is the route you would actually take.
Living in Garneau
What is around you
Both buildings are beside campus
University Tower is on 112 Street, which is the campus boundary. Garneau Towers is on 111 Street, one block east of it. From either one you walk to a lecture; from neither one do you need a transit pass to get to class.
The hospital is closer than the library
University of Alberta Hospital is four minutes from University Tower and six from Garneau Towers. For anyone on a nursing, medicine, pharmacy or rehabilitation placement, that is the number that decides where you live.
Two LRT stations, both Capital Line
University station and Health Sciences/Jubilee are both within nine minutes of either building. The Capital Line runs north under the river to downtown and south to Century Park, so getting out of Garneau does not require a car or a favour.
Whyte Avenue in eight minutes
Old Strathcona is eight minutes from Garneau Towers and nine from University Tower. Record shops, the Princess Theatre, more restaurants than a student budget can survive, the farmers’ market on Saturdays and the Fringe swallowing the whole street every August.
Elms, and the reason we are named for them
Garneau’s streets run under a mature American elm canopy that is among the largest left anywhere in North America — most cities lost theirs to Dutch elm disease and Alberta did not. In summer 111 Street is a green tunnel. In winter the bare crowns are the best thing about the walk home.
The reason to live in Garneau is that you stop budgeting time for the commute. A 9am is five minutes away, not an hour and a bus you might miss in February.
