A summer term is short enough that packing decisions matter. Anything you bring that you did not need is weight you paid to fly; anything you left behind that the room does not have is a first-evening errand after a long flight.
Here is what the room already contains, what it does not, and where the rest is.
What is already there
A full bed with linens, made up before you arrive. A study desk, a desk lamp, shelving. Most room types add a wall-mounted television. The suite’s kitchen and its dining or sitting area are furnished.
Heat, water, power and Wi-Fi are on and in the rent. Laundry is in the building. There is no account to open in your name and close in August.
That is the whole point of a furnished term: you can land, get into the room, and sleep. Nothing about the first night depends on a delivery or a shop being open.
What to bring
Clothes for two seasons, because Edmonton in June is not Edmonton in August. Your laptop and its charger. Documents — placement letter, ID, anything the university or the hospital asked for. Any medication you cannot easily replace. Whatever makes a room feel like yours: photographs, a small speaker, the one book.
That is a genuine two-suitcase list.
What to buy in the first week, not before
Toiletries. Bedding extras if you sleep cold. Kitchen items your suite happens to be missing — ask the three people already there before buying anything, because a four-bedroom suite usually already has pans.
None of it needs to be in your luggage.
Where the shops are, in minutes on foot
From Garneau Towers (8510 111 St NW): H Mart is 6 minutes, Safeway 8. From University Tower (8515 112 St NW): H Mart 4 minutes, Safeway 10.
Those are measured along the street grid at eighty metres a minute and rounded up — Edmonton is a strict grid, so it is the route you would actually walk, not a straight line on a map.
Getting to where you will actually be
If the placement is at the hospital, that is the number that matters: University of Alberta Hospital is 4 minutes from University Tower and 6 from Garneau Towers.
For campus, the Education building and Coutts Library are 5 minutes from University Tower and 7 from Garneau Towers. Main Quad, at the far side, is 12 and 14.
For everything else there are two Capital Line LRT stations within nine minutes of either building — University, and Health Sciences/Jubilee. The line runs north under the river to downtown and south to Century Park, so leaving the neighbourhood does not need a car.
Whyte Avenue — Old Strathcona, and the Fringe in August — is 8 minutes from Garneau Towers and 9 from University Tower. If your term runs to the end of August, you will be living a nine-minute walk from the festival.
The term itself
June to August, on the Deluxe and Flex Plus rooms at Garneau Towers, at a lower weekly rate than the academic year. Ask us for the current rate — it moves with availability, and a stale number on a page is worse than no number: email, WhatsApp or call, Monday to Saturday, 9:00–19:00 Mountain Time.
Before you arrive you pay one security deposit and nothing else. If you are coming from outside Canada, book a video tour, apply from where you are and sign electronically — that is how most of both buildings fills.
